cycle

she wanted to hold him tight
tight for her was enough love
love but was out of sight
sight for so long and how
how he longed to hug her once
once like once upon a time
time but had fired its guns
guns proud of their crime.

needful things

a kiss of health, the reek of love
forgiveness from the gods above
warm food to put on the plate
a friend who thinks that you’re great
wealth enough for want and need
a good book for the soul to read
ah but what more can a man dare ask
but for some whiskey in his flask?

kashmir

the man clenches a stone in his hand
and roars and lets it fly
but in an irony he can’t understand
he gets a pellet in his eye

the soldier takes aim with his gun
and fires at the baying crowd
but shivers under the blazing sun
and wonders why he’s not proud

the politician comprehends all of it
it’s a truth he’s always known
yes, fire turns into pyre bit by bit
but it’s wood that feeds the throne.
